From selling Boxers to writing legal thrillers

Did you know that John Grisham used to sell Boxers in the Men’s underwear section at Sears? He tried his best to get transferred to another department but his bosses just kept raising his salary!  He got in and out of multiple jobs before he zeroed down on a career in Law – writing still didn’t figure anywhere.

Then it happened – in 1984, it was a trial involving a young girl who had been raped and beaten – it was not his case. Yet, it got him to start writing and three years later, his first novel, A Time to Kill was ready.

Grisham writes about how he stumbled upon writing as a career in this article in New York Times. It is a good read.

What would we have missed if he had got transferred to the toys’ section? I guess The Pelican Brief would have had an altogether different meaning in his life.
